Women’s History Month
As March is Women’s History Month, we would like to thank all of the women that have inspired and supported our work at the Indigenous Justice Circle, all of whom are pillars of their communities and work relentlessly to serve others.
Although our mission to support Native women, girls, and Two-Spirit relatives is year round, this month we invite you to join us in celebrating matrilineal legacies and histories of women’s strength and resilience.
Prior to colonization, Haudenosaunee women had rights equal to men’s and were active participants in political life. As the oldest continuous democracy in the world, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy inspired the first U.S. Constitution, and almost a century later suffragettes at Seneca Falls drew inspiration from Haudenosaunee women to fight for women’s suffrage.
Today, Indigenous women across Turtle Island continue to be active members of their communities, often taking on leadership roles and sustaining matrilineal traditions.
